A recent survey from Microsoft reveals that small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK are wasting an estimated £3 billion of investment on websites that are virtually invisible to search engines, such as Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft’s Live Search.
The survey, which canvassed 400 SMEs, showed that although 2.79 million small businesses have an online presence, 62% are not investing in search marketing campaigns. Search marketing can include Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and Pay per Click (PPC) advertising and can be used to make the website as visible as possible to search engines, therefore assisting potential customers to finding them online and driving more traffic to the website.
A total of 44% of respondents believed that search marketing was too time consuming, 56% considered it too expensive and 33%, too complicated. Microsoft’s Small Business Centre has launched ‘Search Marketing for Small Businesses,’ a booklet containing guidelines on promoting websites and making them more visible.
